ON TIME

Time implies progress and change, always pushing forward, never stopping.

Yet, despite this constant development, there is regression; we seem to revisit the same life events over and over. I find myself coming back to the same struggles, the same feelings, and the same circumstances. Even when everything seems different, nothing is new.

To illustrate this paradoxical concept of progression coupled with regression, I have drawn on the imagery of tides and seasons. Seasons represent longer periods of time, a string of moments tied together by a common defining characteristic. Tides are indicative of shorter lengths of time, the smaller moments that happen within the seasons. In my cups, the changing phases of the moon mark the changing of seasons, while the height of the turquoise glaze indicates the watermark of the tide.

The book is a collection of quotes and definitions centered around the subject of endings and change because—even though we find ourselves in the same place again and again—we are often reluctant to face change and accept the passage of time. The purpose of this book is to create a space for personal reflection on time and its effects. It also serves as a reminder that this dissatisfaction with endings points us toward something beyond time.
